We’re Saving our own history.

Knoxville Queer History was started in 2016 following local, state, and federal crackdowns on LGBTQ+ equality. We began our work collecting oral histories as the Voices Out Loud Project (VOLP). In 2018 we began collecting physical and digital artifacts in 2018 to supplement the amazing stories told by our oral history narrators and thus Knoxville Queer History (KQH) was born. In 2019 KQH/VOLP entered in an agreement with UT Libraries to host the oral histories and artifacts.

To date, we have conducted 53 oral histories, hundreds of artifacts, and thousands of documents that tell the story of queer people in Knoxville and Appalachia.

Our Mission
